<![CDATA[Research Associate in Quantum Fibre Photonics (SS13805)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13805 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13805 About the role

We invite applications for an exciting opportunity in the Centre for Photonics at the 麻豆社. The role is available for up to 7 months as a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to develop advanced optical fibre technologies for ultraviolet (UV-C) quantum key distribution (QKD) in satellite communication networks. This well-resourced and collaborative project is led by the University of Bristol, with partners at the Universities of Strathclyde and York and Fraunhofer UK, and aims to extend the security benefits of quantum communication to a truly global scale.

Working closely with our collaborators, you will contribute to the development of a hollow-core optical fibre designed to operate in the UV-C spectral region (100–280 nm). The fibre will act as a mode-filtering solution that ensures secure quantum key distribution without disturbing the polarisation encoding—addressing one of the most challenging aspects of satellite-based quantum communication systems.

You will design, fabricate, and characterise hollow-core fibres that are single-moded at UV-C wavelengths and exhibit temperature- and stress-independent polarisation behaviour. Your work will draw on the 麻豆社’s research-grade optical fibre fabrication cleanroom and state-of-the-art photonics laboratories. The project offers an opportunity to expand your expertise in fibre fabrication, UV photonics, and quantum technologies, and to contribute to the development of a pathfinder platform for future global quantum networks.

About you

You will hold (or be close to completing) a doctorate in experimental photonics, quantum optics, or a closely related discipline. Strong experimental skills and a solid understanding of optical waveguides and light–matter interactions are required. Experience with optical fibre fabrication, hollow-core fibre, or ultraviolet photonics will be advantageous but is not essential.

The Centre for Photonics is a collaborative research environment of around 50 academics, researchers, and postgraduate students. The Department of Physics at the 麻豆社 is a research-led department committed to providing a supportive and inclusive workplace. We strongly encourage applications from groups typically under-represented in UK physics departments.

Further information

This is a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term role with an expected start date of September 2026 until March 2027.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Kristina Rusimova (k.rusimova@bath.ac.uk).

As a member of Research Staff at the 麻豆社, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

We have an excellent international reputation with staff from over 60 different nations and have made a positive commitment towards gender equity and intersectionality receiving a Silver Athena SWAN award. • Experience collecting, managing, and handling data from multiple participants or large datasets.
 • Experience working with clinical or research partners to support collaboration and study delivery.
 • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing reports and communicating with diverse stakeholders.
 • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and deliver tasks to agreed timelines.
 • Strong IT skills relevant to research coordination and data management.

<![CDATA[Research Assistant in Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy Luminescence (SS13790)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13790 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13790 About the role

We seek to recruit a highly motivated researcher with a strong background in STM-induced single molecule manipulation, or a closely related field for a 6-month Research Assistant position funded by the EPSRC award Shining light on single molecule dynamics: photon by photon (grant reference EP/X031934/1, PI: Dr Kristina Rusimova).

You will contribute to the project by developing and implementing a state-of-the-art scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) luminescence system capable of single-photon counting and photon correlation measurements. Working with a room-temperature ultrahigh vacuum STM, you will design and optimise the optical detection setup to investigate the temporal behaviour of molecular emitters and hot-electron-driven processes at the single-molecule level.

A key aspect of the role is the development of automated experimental workflows and instrument control using Python. You will contribute to our existing laboratory automation framework by integrating hardware control, data acquisition, and analysis pipelines to enable reliable, high-throughput measurements.

In addition, you will analyse, publish, and disseminate research findings through high-quality journal publications and presentations at international conferences. You will collaborate closely with project partners and members of the research group, contribute to a vibrant and interdisciplinary research environment, and have opportunities to support the supervision of postgraduate researchers. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in single-molecule spectroscopy, scientific instrumentation, and laboratory automation while contributing to cutting-edge research at the interface of nanoscience, photonics, and quantum technologies.

As a member of Research Staff at the 麻豆社, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year"

About you

You will hold a Master's degree in Physics or a closely related discipline. You will have hands-on experience in experimental scanning probe microscopy, including room-temperature single-molecule manipulation and spectroscopy, together with excellent laboratory skills and a strong understanding of the underlying physical principles.

You will have demonstrable experience in scientific programming with Python, including laboratory automation, instrument control, data acquisition, and the development of robust and reproducible data analysis workflows. Experience with version control (e.g. Git) and scientific software development would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will be motivated to develop as an independent experimental researcher and will contribute to the design, implementation, and optimisation of advanced instrumentation for single-molecule spectroscopy. Experience with ultrahigh vacuum systems, scanning tunnelling microscopy, STM-induced luminescence, or single-photon detection would be advantageous but is not essential.

Excellent communication and organisational skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative research team, and enthusiasm for developing new experimental techniques are essential.

Further information

We are seeking a collaborative and ambitious colleague who is committed to shaping a sustainable future and has a passion for both research and teaching to join our Chemical Engineering community at 麻豆社. You will contribute to the growth of our research in future-focused sustainable technologies and inspire the next generation of chemical engineers. Our highly regarded chemical engineering degree programmes equip students to tackle global challenges such as climate change and the sustainable provision of water, energy, food, and wellbeing. Together with a full CV, please fully complete the online application form and provide two statements, each of up to two pages:

 • A research statement which should include your vision and plans including an outline of how you will establish independent research at 麻豆社. Your research statement needs to outline your plans and intentions for research activity and grant capture over the coming five years. This document will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership.
 • A second document describing your teaching vision and plans. This should explain how your experience and qualifications enable you to teach across the full range of our chemical engineering degrees, and how you would support their future development. Please also outline your approach to incorporating systems thinking throughout the curriculum. In addition, describe how you promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in your everyday work, particularly when teaching and mentoring students and researchers. Both documents are mandatory components of the selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.

About you

You will bring a strong interdisciplinary track record in life cycle assessment (LCA), systems thinking, and/or material flow analysis (MFA), grounded in chemical engineering. You will play a key role in teaching across our programmes and in building links with researchers across the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Your research will focus on quantifying environmental impacts across complex systems, applying systems-level approaches to evaluate trade-offs, resource constraints, and pathways towards more sustainable futures, and align with one of our Research Centres. Additional opportunities for collaboration are provided through the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change (ISCC). You will also have access to doctoral researchers through programmes such as the CDT in Sustainable Chemical Technologies: A Systems Approach.
